Happy Summer, friends! There’s no better way to bring in the new skincare season on the blog than by sharing the latest beauty box from Boxwalla which happens to be Summer themed, containing gorgeous products from 5YINA that help skin adapt to the Summer climate.
5YINA was founded by Ervina Wu and Angela Chau, both practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In their own words, 5YINA integrates the ancient wisdom of TCM and modern science to create a skincare line that is efficacious, intelligently formulated, and beautiful to use. 5YINA crafts their products according to the seasonal cycles, delivering formulas that help our skin adapt to the season’s change.
Themed “A Summer in Hangzhou“, Boxwalla’s June Beauty Box* includes 2 products inspired by the Summers in Hangzhou, China. Ervina Wu of 5Yina says of the Lucent Beauty Duo – “The idea of creating a summer beauty collection was sparked by the subtropical summers of Hangzhou, China. Summer in Hangzhou is lush and poetic (think gorgeous bamboo groves, pretty willow trees, and languid lakes), with its fair share of sweltering, unglamorous days…The LUCENT beauty line is our vision of a refreshing summer beauty ritual. Inspired by the fragrant lotus gardens of Hangzhou, LUCENT DUO feels herbaceous and lightweight. Formulated with an alchemy of pure and potent medicinal plants to keep your complexion fresh and dewy all through summer.”

“Clarifying and gentle, the LUCENT hydrolat is a skin-refining toner essence inspired by the energy of summer. Super charged by Chinese medicinal plants, cleansing distillates, anti-bacterial silver, and lightweight humectants to purify and re-balance oily combination skin.”
Lucent is 5Yina’s answer to an oil-balancing + hydrating facial mist for Summer. This hydrolat is based in aloe juice and distillates of cucumber, helichrysum, peppermint, and honeysuckle. Key botanicals and key TCM herbal ingredients include: willow bark extract, american ginseng, snow mushroom, licorice root, lotus, green tea, schisandra berries, chinese angelica, and neroli. Aloe, cucumber, snow mushroom, and glycerin deliver a dose of hydrating humectants, while ingredients like witch hazel and willow bark extract provide astringent benefits that cleanse + re-balance sebum production. Helichrysum, lotus, and neroli work to calm down heated and inflamed Summer skin.
This beautiful essence has been my go-to mist ever since I started using it back in May. Firstly, the scent is really what gets me! Neroli comes through crisp with notes of other herbs and I pick up on a slight but fresh cucumber scent – I love anything with cucumber in it. For me it’s a special sensory experience when a product not only physically suits my skin for the season, but has the aromatherapy to match it. Performance-wise, this essence has been amazing for my skin. The formula is perfectly balanced – it gives my dehydration-prone skin a nice dose of hydration, while the witch hazel and herbal deck have been doing wonders at keeping my pores clean. It’s also the perfect hydrator to layer with oils and other skincare layers – I find that my facial oils absorb really well with this one. Another note of importance, if you’re a regular GBM reader you’ll know of my dislike for tacky mists – I’m happy to report that this one is not tacky! I love it so much that in the beginning weeks of use I found myself burning through the bottle quite quickly, so I would approach use with this one in the “less is more” manner.
50ml; $45 retail value.
“Herbaceous and lightweight, LUCENT is inspired by the energy of summer and ideal for those with normal to oily/combination skin. Supercharged with extracts from Chinese medicinal plants, vitamins, antioxidants, and active phytonutrients to help minimize appearance of pores, re-balance sebum production, reduce inflammation, and prevent breakouts. This skin-refining cocktail sinks in quickly to promote a clear, dewy, and glowing visage.”
The Lucent Beauty Oil is 5Yina’s lightweight facial oil formulated to help skins adapt to the Summer climate which can often appear oily, inflamed, or dull due to warmer weather and sun exposure. It’s based in camellia and grapeseed oils and contains all of the great TCM herbs found in the hydrolat such as American ginseng, snow mushroom, lotus, green tea, schisandra berries, licorice root, and more. You’ll also find safflower oil, sea buckthorn oil (which gives the oil its deep orange hue), anti-aging rosehip seed oil, and perilla seed oil. This oil blend was designed for normal-combination skin types – its herbal ingredients provide sebum balancing + clarifying benefits while the wonderful oils it contains provide enough moisture without making the skin feel too oily. This oil is very fragrant with notes of vetiver, petit grain and ho wood.
The hydrolat and face oil are a dream team when combined together! Since I have dehydrated skin I tend to go for products that are labeled towards dry skin types while avoiding things that are astringent, but there is something about this duo in the way that their formulas are balanced that doesn’t leave my skin dry or wanting more, but rather helps it achieve normalcy. When applied on top of the hydrolat, this oil (I am doing a chef’s kiss here while talking about it) absorbs so well and creates such a glowy and somehow juicy yet not oily canvas on my skin. It is just the prettiest effect – I really haven’t been this impressed with a new face oil for some time. During the day time I prefer to use the mist and oil only, but at night I love applying Flower and Spice’s Daily Moisturizer (featured in the April box) on top of the oil for more moisture and to seal all that goodness in. This combo makes my skin really supple and keeps it looking soft as I wake up in the mornings. If you like lightweight face oils for Summer time that aren’t too dry but rather hit that sweet spot of providing just enough moisture without being heavy, this is definitely one to try!
30ml; $145 retail value.
As I mentioned at the top, subscriptions for this box are over, but one-time June beauty boxes are available to purchase for $69.95. The total retail value of this box is $190 so the one-time box is still quite the deal!
