Confessions of a Daffodil – August Boxwalla Beauty | VOTARY

Boxwalla’s August Beauty Box reunites its recipients with cult-favorite (and Boxwalla fan-favorite) Votary London, showcasing two full-sized exquisitely beautiful products whose flower extracts whisper secrets from petal, to our skin.

This month’s box derives its theme from a special ingredient that both featured products contain – narcissus extract – otherwise known as daffodil extract. This extract mainly benefits the skin with brightening action, reducing and preventing spots by interrupting the chain of melanin production. Additionally, the daffodil extract is rich in free radical-fighting antioxidants, combating skin damage and premature aging often caused by UV rays and pollution.

What’s in the August Beauty Box* ($254 total retail value):

  • Votary Brightening Hyaluronic Serum with Narcissus and AHA – based in neroli flower water, this multi-tasking gel serum delivers hydration, brightens the skin, and contains a gentle exfoliating AHA blend at 1-2%. 1.7 fl oz / $118 retail value.
  • Votary Intense Overnight Mask with Rosehip and Hyaluronic – an overnight treatment cream formulated to brighten skin and smooth fine lines for a more youthful, radiant complexion. 1.7 fl oz / $136 retail value.

What is Boxwalla all about? To put it simply, they like to fill boxes with things that MUST be experienced. Boxwalla is a bi-monthly subscription box service that showcases artists and artisans from around the world giving the subscriber a choice of three different interests to choose from: The Beauty Box, The Film Box, and The Book Box. Each box is curated with context in mind and with a story to be told, each one delivering a beautiful sensory experience. Green beauty enthusiasts will appreciate that they have high standards when it comes to ingredients and that they actually use, love, and enjoy the products they feature. Boxwalla typically features between 1-4 products including both full and generous deluxe travel-sizes. Their beauty box rings in at just $49.95 every other month, with each box valuing well over the price tag. If supply is available, they will offer one-time boxes after subscriptions close and they also offer non-renewing gift cycles.

Top – serum; bottom – mask

» gel; based in neroli water
» hydrates, brightens, and gently exfoliates
» star ingredients include narcissus (daffodil extract), sodium hyaluronate, 1-2% AHA blend
» contains antioxidant-rich bilberry extract
» scent: sweet and floral
» 1.7 fl oz / $118 retail value.

The Brightening Hyaluronic Serum is Votary’s solution for uneven skin tones that are dull and dehydrated. This dreamy floral gel is a multi-tasker – it provides relief and hydration to dry & dehydrated skin, it reduces skin damage & hyperpigmentation to even skin tone, and it gently exfoliates and resurfaces the skin – all working in tandem to achieve a more radiant and glowing complexion. It also includes antioxidant-rich bilberry extract which not only helps to reduce damage caused by UV rays and pollution, but it also supports barrier function to strengthen skin.

This serum provides gentle chemical exfoliation via glycolic acid and lactic acid included at a 1-2% strength. This percentage is low enough that you should be able to use this serum daily without sensitivities, but as always YMMV with chemical exfoliators, so start off slow if necessary. I usually avoid products with AHA’s, but when I am gifted products that contain them I try my best to incorporate the products into my routines for the sake of testing. For me, the low concentration of AHA acids hasn’t produced any issues thus far even with daily use, which I think may be the trick in being able to reap the benefits while avoiding the harsher side effects often experienced at percentages 5% and greater.

The body and the scent of this serum are an absolute dream – I can’t get over the delectably sweet and floral jasmine notes and I love the way this serum gels and glides over the skin. I don’t have a preference over thick or thin serums, but I can’t deny the way that a thick gel feels more luxurious in the way it cocoons skin in hydrating silk.

» soothing, creamy treatment mask
» anti-aging; smooths fine lines
» brightens, hydrates dull skin
» includes daffodil extract, rosehip & sodium hyaluronate
» scent: seed oils
» 1.7 fl oz / $136 retail value.

I can see why Boxwalla paired these two products together as Votary’s Intense Overnight Mask is the most perfect and complementary treatment to top the brightening serum with. This blended leave-on mask provides some of the same benefits as the brightening serum (hydrates, brightens, smooths) but the ingredients instead come wrapped in a beautiful, pillow-y cloud cream that cocoons skin with additional moisture and anti-aging benefits.

This treatment is intended to be used as an overnight mask, which means that you’ll want to apply it as your last step in your PM skincare routine, but you’ll leave it on without rinsing it off. Masks are typically used 2-3x a week or as occasionally needed because they contain potent ingredients that shouldn’t be used every day, but I don’t see any ingredients in this mask that would indicate it couldn’t be used nightly as your moisturizer. Initially this mask sets with a sort of pasty semi-matte finish, but after it settles in it feels like a regular moisturizer.

After you use this mask, expect to wake up to the softest, most glowing skin you’ve ever had! Especially when used in combination with the brightening serum, it amazes me how bright and radiant my complexion always is the next morning.

If you’d like to try this luxurious pair for yourself, subscriptions for the August Beauty Box are still open. As always, the cost to subscribe is just $49.95, with this box delivering tremendous value as the cost of the featured products combined rings in at $254.
