Frangipani Fables & Black Rice Tales: February Boxwalla Beauty

Today I’m thrilled to finally share my thoughts on Boxwalla’s February Beauty Box* that featured a Boxwalla-familiar brand, Siam Seas!

Themed “Frangipani Fables & Black Rice Tales“, Boxwalla and Siam Seas invite you to ‘listen’ to these fables and tables as whispered to you by these two new launches from the brand: Sai Clear Skin Serum ($65 retail value) and Kwam Rak Radiance of Love Body Serum ($90 retail value). The ‘Frangipani’ component of the theme comes from the scent of Kwam Rak which includes a plumeria absolute that is combined with jasmine sambac to create something… intoxicating, to put it lightly. The ‘Black Rice’ component comes from the black rice water that is used in the base of the Sai facial serum. Both featured products are full-sized.

Subscriptions have since closed, but this box is still available right now as a one-time box at a cost of $74.95 (box is valued at $155!)

About the brand: Siam Seas’ founder Supadra Geronimo came to craft her skincare line inspired by her time of growing up in Thailand and steeped in a culture that used herbs and minerals to heal and treat. Supadra combines the potency of these ancient medicinal botanicals with research-backed actives to create a uniquely modern line that still holds within it centuries of ancient wisdom.

What is Boxwalla all about? To put it simply, they like to fill boxes with things that MUST be experienced. Boxwalla is a bi-monthly subscription box service that showcases artists and artisans from around the world giving the subscriber a choice of four different interests to choose from: The Beauty Box, The Food Box, The Film Box, and The Book Box. Each box is curated with context in mind and with a story to be told, each one delivering a beautiful sensory experience. Green beauty lovers will appreciate that they have high standards when it comes to ingredients and that they actually use, love, and enjoy the products they feature. Boxwalla typically features between 1-4 products including both full and generous deluxe travel-sizes. Their beauty box rings in at just $49.95 every other month, with each box valuing well over the price tag. If supply is available, they will offer one-time boxes after subscriptions close and they also offer non-renewing gift cycles.

Siam Seas Sai Clear Skin Serum

Sai Clear Skin Serum • 20 ml | $65 Value

Sai is a powerhouse antioxidant serum that synergistically combines a stable form of vitamin C and science-proven actives to create a second skin-like protective layer providing a firming appearance and natural glow.  It uses organic plant extracts’ energies to smoothen skin texture, soothe lesions and redness, brighten dark spots and even skin tone.

When Supadra describes the Sai Clear Skin Serum as a powerhouse of a serum, it couldn’t be more true. I’m going to include the full ingredients list below my thoughts in this review – it’s a really attractive list of incredible and effective ingredients. Sai is a rice water-based Vitamin C serum that is intended to do it all – it calms inflammation and active skin conditions, it heals wounds, it protects against photoaging, it reduces texture, it brightens dark spots, it evens skin tone — all while forming a protective barrier for the skin. Notable ingredients include gypsum, moth bean, milk thistle (love!), MSM, neem, ceramides (excellent for barrier health), green tea, licorice, and many more. The included Vitamin C is a vitamin c ester (ascorbyl phosphate) and is said to contain a high percentage of it.

The scent: like pure, vanilla co2 extract. It’s amazing and it’s become my favorite part of applying my PM skincare — I want to BATHE in Sai.

Before I go on to my wildly positive results, I have to address the texture of this serum. Sai is a cream with a grainy, slightly clumpy texture that stems from the Gypsum ingredient which is a powdered mineral that absorbs water and dissolves upon application. It’s a highly beneficial ingredient that is regenerative and aids in wound healing. The grainy and clumpy texture of Sai is NOT a formula issue, but rather it is intended to be this way and is harmless. There was an issue in the first batch of Sai with the gypsum that has since been resolved and there should be no issues with getting the serum to pump correctly, but be sure to give it a good shake and warm the bottle between your hands if necessary in a cold environment.

I had mixed feelings about the serum because of its texture at first, but now that I’ve seen amazing results with it I’m no longer on the fence and consider it one of the most effective serums I have tried. For context, my biggest skin issues have always been unsightly texture that stems from a build up of dead skin cells, and the many issues that stem from that which include clogged pores and redness. AHA’s are too harsh, as are many physical exfoliants. For daily exfoliation I use a washcloth and a Foreo cleansing device, but truthfully speaking this doesn’t suffice to really reduce texture to the point that I want. With Sai, I have seen results that are practically overnight. I don’t use Sai every night — maybe 3 times a week or so just to make sure I’m not going overboard on actives — but even when I skip using it for a couple nights in a row my skin is seriously improved after one use. With just one use my skin is noticeably smoother with a reduction in texture and my overall clarity is improved — my pores are more clear, my skin is less red and more even-toned, and it’s a lot brighter since having been exfoliated. I feel it’s also been keeping break outs at bay because since incorporating it into my routine I seldom break out in small blemishes. Post-acne marks along my jaw have also been significantly reduced to the point that I can’t really see them anymore. The TLDR version; this serum legitimately WORKS for me as Siam Seas intended and I’m impressed that it exceeded my original expectations.

Siam Seas Kwam Rak Radiance of Love Body Serum

Siam Seas Kwam Rak Radiance (of Love) Body Serum • 100 ml | $90 value

Kwam Rak (means love) is a gorgeous true hybrid body serum that instantly hydrates like body lotion and deeply moisturizes like body oil.  This light, creamy textured serum immediately absorbs into the skin after application leaving only a delicate layer of oil to support and protect the health of your skin barrier and moisture within, while creating a radiant glow.”

If you’re looking for a plant-based luxury body product – this is IT. Kwam Rak Body Serum is sort of a hybrid (we’ll get to that in a sec) body serum that feels like it’s so much more than just a moisturizer for your body. While it does do that, it also delivers other benefits like healing and barrier protection via ceramides and circulation-improvement from the mustard seed oil.

As for the hybrid aspect of it, it has a consistency and application of a thin water-y body lotion (aka a serum-like consistency) but it has a resulting finish and feel of a body oil. It is water-based and it includes aloe fillet gel and glycerin alongside its foremost oils of mustard seed and sunflower, but this emulsion provides an after-feel and result similar to what you would expect with a body oil, but slightly more absorbent and more supple in my experience.

Where this serum really shines is in its scent which I find paradoxical in a wonderful way. It’s sweet with floral notes of plumeria and jasmine, yet it’s earthy and slightly musky with the grounding notes of mustard seed and nutmeg. It’s uplifting and makes you want to skip through a field of blooming flowers during the Spring, but it’s also comforting and makes you want to get cozy under the covers by candlelight on a chilly Fall night. It’s one of those scents that I can’t fit into any particular mood or season — it just fits them all. I admit that it’s so precious to me I find myself conservatively using it more so on my upper body. I don’t want to run out this stuff, ever!

It feels like a coincidence that every February beauty box from Boxwalla ends up being among my top favorite boxes! If you’d like to try these gorgeous products for yourself, Boxwalla still has one-time February beauty boxes available for $74.95 for a short time while they last. One-time boxes are just that, a one-time non-renewing purchase and is subscription-free unlike their standard service, allowing you to try a box without the commitment of a subscription.

April beauty box subscriptions are also open! April’s box will be including two full-size products: Malaya Organics Advanced Repair Mask (made with neem honey) and Flower and Spice’s Rose + Coriander Daily Moisturizer. I’ve been testing both out and I think it’s going to be a great box for new brand discoveries. Subscribe for $49.95 by March 25th to get these two products worth a total value of $160.
