June Boxwalla Beauty Box ft. Earthwise Beauty

It’s that time again for the reveal of the latest Boxwalla beauty box and I’m already bursting to share my thoughts on this month’s chosen products! Themed “The Wandering Wood Nymph’s Sun-Kissed Alchemy“, June’s beauty box* features Washington-native Earthwise Beauty, founded by the lovely Ava Zhan who set out to create incredibly pure, powerful, and potent handcrafted skincare. Featuring a hydrating serum, a nutrient-dense face oil, and a customizable (and very innovative) SPF powder, June’s Summer themed box is destined to refresh, replenish, and protect the skin.

The goods on Boxwalla: To put it simply, they like to fill boxes with things that MUST be experienced. Boxwalla is a bi-monthly subscription box service that showcases artists and artisans from around the world giving the subscriber a choice of four different interests to choose from: The Beauty Box, The Food Box, The Film Box, and The Book Box. Each box is curated with context in mind and with a story to be told, each one delivering a beautiful sensory experience. Green beauty lovers will appreciate that they have high standards when it comes to ingredients and that they actually use, love, and enjoy the products they feature. Boxwalla typically features 2-4 products including both full and generous deluxe travel-sizes. Their beauty box rings in at just $49.95 every other month, with each box valuing well over the price tag.

What has our wandering wood nymph discovered for us this Summer? Some VERY deluxe skincare treats – that’s what! Valuing at $158, June’s box delivers the baby blue-hued Nap in the Meadow Face Serum, Ruby Facial Oil, and Farizad’s Veil SPF 30+ Powder. I’ve only been testing these products for about one week, but I love and enjoy everything that Boxwalla chooses and it took me no time to come to that conclusion with these products.

Let’s dig in! I highly recommend to check out each product page on the Earthwise Beauty site as Ava really dives into the fine details of her products and their ingredients.

Nap in the Meadow Face Serum

Retail Value: $50

Nap in the Meadow is a lightweight aloe-based gel serum. Packed to the brim with beneficial ingredients like turmeric, helichrysum, yarrow, blue chamomile, and some new-to-me resins like galbanum and copaiba balsum, this serum is designed to deliver immense calming benefits and hydration.

I’ve been reserving this serum for day time since it sets with a matte finish. It’s slightly hydrating for me, but because of the matte finish I find it’s necessary to follow it with another hydrating step before I move on to my oil and moisturizer. In that regard, I could skip it for the hydration factor but I really love the calming ingredients it contains and that is its main purpose for my morning routine. I could stare at this serum all day, and oh, how I love its incredibly fragrant yarrow scent!

Ingredients –

Aloe leaf juice*, elderberry fruit extract, turmeric CO2 Total supercritical extract, caprylyl capryl glucoside (naturally derived), naturally derived non-GMO unrefined tocopherol (vitamin E), lavender oil (* and †), yarrow oil*, Italian everlasting oil†, German blue chamomile oil*, potassium sorbate (natural preservative), organic geranium bourbon oil, geranium rose oil*, copaiba balsam resin†, galbanum oil*, xanthan gum, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), wildflower essences†.
*Certified organic. †Responsibly wildcrafted. Aloe vera certified by the International Aloe Science Council (IASC) for purity and content.

Ruby Facial Oil

Retail Value: $58

Ruby is a lightweight facial oil with one impressive ingredient deck! Ruby contains a handful of oils like guava, milk thistle, cranberry, rosehip, sacha inchi, raspberry, and so many more. Somehow, it maintains its light fruity quality while being densely packed with many nutritious ingredients. While it’s a multi-tasker, Ruby is focused on antioxidant action and aims to protect the skin from sun damage, utilizing oils like buriti and pequi.

Like with Nap in the Meadow, I reserve Ruby for day time since it’s very lightweight and low on emollients. Its pretty orange hue fades shortly after application, so no worries about staining! It gives my skin a hint of a glow and no oily/greasy sheen. I have tested it at night but it doesn’t quite moisturize enough for my richer taste. Ruby and Nap in the Meadow would make an excellent combo for oily skin, but for my dehydration-prone skin I have to make sure I insert another hydrating serum and/or moisturizer into the mix. It’s a great option for hot days and it’s also the perfect oil to mix with their Farizad’s Veil SPF powder, which I will expound on more below. Lastly, it has a hint of a celery scent which I personally enjoy.

Ingredients –

Organic Psidium guajava (guava) seed oil (India), organic Silybum marianum (milk thistle) seed oil, Vacinnium macrocarpon (cranberry) oil*, organic whole-fruit Rosa canina (rosehip) oil, Plukenetia volubilis (sacha inchi) seed oil*, Rubus ideaus (raspberry) seed oil*, organic pequi fruit oil, wildcrafted Moringa oleifera seed oil, blue tamanu oil* (India), organic buriti fruit oil, turmeric supercritical CO2 Select extract* (India), vitamin E (from certified non-GMO sunflowers), organic primrose seed CO2 Total extract, organic celery CO2 Total, wildcrafted mimosa flower absolute (artisanally extracted in Grasse, France).

My messy attempt at creating the Ruby + Farizad SPF lotion!

Farizad’s Veil – SPF 30+ Sun Protective Powder

Retail Value: $50

In Ava’s words, Farizad’s Veil is her take on sun protection for the contemporary woman. She understands how one doesn’t want to disrupt a carefully chosen and tested skincare ritual and how adding problematic sunscreens disrupt this perfect base of products. Farizad’s Veil is mostly comprised of non-nano zinc oxide, but also includes aloe whole leaf powder, rose absolute, pink champaca absolute, geranium bourbon oil, rose geranium oil, and frankincense. The rose ingredients give this soft powder its lovely rose fragrance – it’s floral but not overly granny-ish.

Combine this powder with your favorite daytime facial oil (Ruby was specifically made for this purpose!) to create a sunscreen lotion that wears beautifully on top of the rest of your skincare.

I hadn’t tried SPF powders prior to using this veil so it’s a rather new and cool experience for me! I didn’t know what to expect or quite how to use it so I’ve been trying Boxwalla’s recommendation on mixing a small bit of powder with about 8 drops of Ruby to start off with. The more oil you use will create more lotion, so you don’t have to apply it all to your face! Start between 4-8 drops and add small sprinklings of the powder until it creates a smooth lotion consistency that isn’t chalky nor greasy from too much oil. Feel free to experiment by combining Nap in the Meadow (or any hydrating serum) into the mix for a boost of hydration. Just as the name describes, it creates a lovely soft veil finish. Sunscreens can be so difficult and many, if not most, aren’t all that wearable. But powders like this one are so innovative to me and it creates an equal playing ground where everyone can experiment and customize to create an SPF that will meet their standards. How neat!

I have received each beauty box since December – with much thanks and gratitude to the sweet Lavanya at Boxwalla who has provided each box for my consideration – and I have to say this box truly has yet to disappoint. Each box is thoughtfully curated with products that speak my language (no idea how Lavanya does it!) and the detail and effort that goes into the whole platform that Boxwalla is is quite incredible. I adore the themes, I enjoy the stories, I admire the brands, and I appreciate that each box is a continuation of the next, designed to work in conjunction with each other. Boxwalla truly is more than just another subscription box – it’s a sensory experience exactly as they describe, and that’s what I love most about it.
