Argan oil is one of the most touted of oils because of its rich nutritional content and its multipurpose uses. Because it is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E (among other antioxidants which neutralize free radicals), argan oil is great for the skin as a facial moisturizer that can minimize fine lines and improve elasticity and skin tone. It’s lightweight for the face, yet heavy enough for use on the body as well. It’s also great for use on the hair as an oil treatment that will nourish the hair shaft, reduce frizz, and give the hair an ample amount of shine.

Not all argan oils are created equal, though. To produce the highest quality of argan oil, the argan nuts must be gathered from the ground to ensure they are sufficiently ripe and the nut must have its exterior pulp intact. If there is no pulp, it means a goat has eaten and digested that nut which can give it a rather foul “farmy” kind of scent. To remove the scent it is then deodorized, which can destroy the nutrients and integrity thereby producing a cheap oil. The location in Morocco from which the argan nuts are harvested can also affect the quality of the argan oil.

Argan oil is the heart of Kahina and they source their oil by harvest and extraction methods that yield the highest quality of argan oil. Their nuts are harvested from the ground with exterior pulp intact and then left to dry in the sun for one week, then depulped and cracked by hand by the Berber women of Morocco who use centuries old techniques. The oil is then cold pressed which will retain its nutrients and aroma. The Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil is raw, certified organic, and certified fair trade. They truly set the gold standard for argan oil!

From the second I saw this oil and smelled it I could tell a huge difference between it and past argan oils I have tried. Compared to other (cheap) argan oils, it’s much lighter in color and runnier in consistency. It also smells much differently, with a rather amazingly clean and nutty scent. I’ve been using this argan oil both morning and night as a facial moisturizer and on my neck and decolletage as well. Before my Kahina Facial Lotion ran out, at night I would mix 2 pumps of the lotion and 3-4 drops of the argan oil and it was a rich, moisturizing combination. For me, it provides the perfect amount of moisture, making my skin pleasantly plump and glowing.  I always assumed I couldn’t wear oils in the daytime underneath makeup because past argan oils I’ve tried were greasy. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that I could wear this underneath makeup, and that it actually improved the appearance of my skin underneath makeup. After 30 minutes-1 hour of application, the majority of it has soaked into my skin with much of the shine gone so that is when I apply my makeup. I might apply primer underneath, but it just depends on the day. Again, at night time it provides adequate moisture and I rest assured that its rich antioxidant content is working its magic at reducing fine lines and signs of aging.

my results

In the past month that I’ve been using this argan oil, I’ve seen improvement in my skin in many ways. My skin’s texture has improved greatly, especially on my forehead which leaves it smooth-looking and clear. I’ve also noticed that it greatly diminishes fine lines, which for me are caused by dryness (for reference, I’m 25 and do not have wrinkles yet). I find that when I do get blemishes, they don’t grow to be large or like cysts as if the oil is helping them from becoming too inflamed. I don’t believe that this oil has caused any breakouts since mine are typically caused by hormones or clogged pores that have erupted into a pimple. I found that when mixing this oil with a water or aloe based moisturizer at night, I saw great improvement in terms of moisture and plumpness as well.

I didn’t have great experiences with argan oil in the past, with which I’ve now come to learn were cheaply produced unlike this argan oil by Kahina. It has made me realize the awful smell, color, and greasy consistency of cheap argan oils. Not to mention that cheap argan oils severely undercut the Berber women in their pay, so when you buy Kahina you will know that the women who extract this oil are being compensated for their hard work. This argan oil has instantly become a favorite of mine and an absolute staple in my skincare routine and because of these reasons I highly, highly recommend it!
