MOSSAIC: June Boxwalla Beauty Review

Today, I’m leaping-out-of-my-seat excited to share the “MOSSAIC” Boxwalla Beauty Box featuring MOSS Skincare that releases this June. MOSS (Modern Organic Sacred Skincare) is the brain child of Celestyna Higgins, an astrophysicist (with fashion and yoga also in her background) who brings logic and mindfulness to the skincare table, specifically with the aim of treating acne and aging skins. Her products include a mosaic of ingredients combining the best of nature with safe and scientifically backed actives to treat a mosaic of skin issues. I’ve previously reviewed MOSS’s sister line Ambar, so I was somewhat familiar with the brand before trying this box.

The June Beauty Box* (which has a whopping $215 value!) is showcasing TWO full-size MOSS products: Beurre Céleste Honey-Infused Rinsable Cleansing Balm and Illumina, their exfoliating Vitamin C treatment serum. This box rings in at $49.95, but subscriptions are closing soon, so now is the time to subscribe!

What you need to know about Boxwalla: To put it simply, they like to fill boxes with things that MUST be experienced. Boxwalla is a bi-monthly subscription box service that showcases artists and artisans from around the world giving the subscriber a choice of four different interests to choose from: The Beauty Box, The Food Box, The Film Box, and The Book Box. Each box is curated with context in mind and with a story to be told, each one delivering a beautiful sensory experience. Green beauty lovers will appreciate that they have high standards when it comes to ingredients and that they actually use, love, and enjoy the products they feature. Boxwalla typically features 2-4 products including both full and generous deluxe travel-sizes. Their beauty box rings in at just $49.95 every other month, with each box valuing well over the price tag.

It’s more of a pale golden color in person!

Beurre Céleste ($70 value) is a rinsable, multi-tasking cleanser specifically formulated to neutralize free radicals. This cleansing concoction contains sunflower seed oil (linoleic-acid rich; well balanced), organic honey (ethically obtained), kokum butter, macadamia seed oil, and seabuckthorn co2 among more to provide a powerful, yet gentle + nourishing cleanse for the skin. Use it on dry skin as a first cleanse to take off SPF and makeup, or use it as your one-and-done cleanser by rinsing with water (it emulsifies!) or by wiping away gently with a damp wash cloth. It can also be used as a moisturizing mask after your skincare routine.

Something unique about this cleansing balm is that it offers exfoliating benefits, but it doesn’t contain physical bits or scrubs! Occasionally when I use this balm I notice that it begins to ball up as I’m massaging it which MOSS notes is totally normal and indicates that dirt and dead skin are being removed. I’m not sure which ingredient lends this effect but I’m inclined to believe it’s the honey because you can feel the traction of the honey as you’re massaging. I stick with using BC 3-4 nights out of the week to avoid over-exfoliation (and because it’s so precious). I’m not sure how Celestyna mastered this powerful-yet-gentle formula, because my pores are looking CLEAN, but my skin is incredibly nourished and soft with no hint of dryness after rinsing it off. This stuff is BOMB.

The scent of this cleansing balm is out of this world! Honey and lemon myrtle combine to create a soft honey-ish slightly fruity scent that makes me open the jar every time my eyes lay on it. At first I wasn’t keen on the lemon myrtle, but it’s grown on me and has transformed beyond what I intitially just thought smelled like lemon. I wish every product could smell as yummy as this!

Illumina ($145 value) is MOSS’s answer to complete cellular renewal. This exfoliating Vitamin C serum is a milky-gel that contains a high percentage of sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), a stable form of Vitamin C that provides photo protection, promotes collagen synthesis, and brightens skin tone by reducing the appearance of post-acne marks and inflammation. This serum is free of acids and retinol, containing only gentle botanicals like moth bean extract, pumpkin enzymes, and white willow bark to provide exfoliation and revive skin’s natural glow and smooth texture. Illumina will help to decongest acneic skin types, while smoothing mature skin types.

Illumina pro-tips: DO follow Moss’s instructions on how to use this serum! It’s pertinent to follow directions when it comes to any kind of exfoliating product so that you do not over-exfoliate and damage your barrier which will cause a whole host of other issues. MOSS recommends to ONLY use Illumina at night and you should be wearing SPF during the day, regardless if you have used Illumina or not. Start off by using Illumina every other night (I used it every other night for the first week, so about 4 times total) and then use it either once a week or every 2-3 days depending on your exfoliating needs.

I’ve been using Illumina for a short amount of time so I haven’t garnered any results Vitamin C-wise, but it is providing gentle exfoliation which I’m happy to report! Exfoliating is one of my main skin concerns (I feel like my skin doesn’t slough off well due to dehydration) and I appreciate a gentle product like this as I no longer use acids. My skin feels much smoother than it has in the +1 month and I’m noticing congestion is reducing on my cheeks. MOSS recommends that you don’t use Illumina with another exfoliating product, but I do like to use it in the same routine as Beurre Celeste as I find both gentle and haven’t experienced over-exfoliation yet.

I feel that what you get out of Illumina will depend on what you are already using on your skin. If you use physical scrubs, acids, or retinol, and your skin is already smooth as a baby’s bottom, you might find this too gentle on the exfoliating front, but every skin type will benefit from the Vitamin C inclusion.

MOSSAIC is one of my favorite themes Boxwalla has released thus far and I’m happy to share that there is still time left to grab this box! Subscribe for $49.95 by June 5th to reserve your box which will ship in early June. Usually there are limited one-time boxes that become available to purchase after subs ship, but subscribing now gives you the better value. If you’ve missed the deadline, I will post links to the one-time boxes as they become available!
