We all know the struggle is real with facial SPF products. The white cast issue tends to be the biggest concern, as well as greasiness, and product pilling in my case – where it starts to ball up during application and is effectively wasted. Sunscreens can also interfere with makeup, causing a cakey appearance. Another issue I tend to have is that I can’t apply oil-based skincare beforehand, but then the sunscreen is not moisturizing enough. Sunscreens are pretty dang hard to master.
URSA MAJOR has just released their Daily Defense Lotion with SPF 18* – a 3-in-1 skincare product aiming to be a facial moisturizer, anti-ager, and sunscreen in one. With plant stem cells, and ingredients like squalane and sodium hyaluronate, and non-nano zinc oxide, this facial lotion will nourish and moisturize the skin, fight signs of aging, and protect the skin from the sun’s rays that damage and age the skin. This week I had the opportunity to test out a sample of the new daily defense lotion. The full size comes in a 1.7oz plastic bottle with a pump.
Zinc oxide (10%) – sunscreen
Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice*, caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter *, gluconolactone, squalane, citric acid, glyceryl stearate, sorbitan stearate, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, cetyl alcohol, sodium benzoate, cetearyl glucoside, cetearyl alcohol, rosa damascena (alpine rose) leaf cell extract, malus domestica (Swiss apple) callus extract, argemone mexicana (Mexican prickly poppy) callus extract, sclerotium gum, lysolecithin, pullulan, xanthan gum, sodium hyaluronate, sodium phytate.
* certified organic
– Made with non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide.
I’m extremely thrilled that this moisturizer doesn’t leave a white cast, if not more thrilled that it doesn’t pill up during application. NO greasiness and it provides the perfect amount of moisture, eliminating the need for a dedicated moisturizer. I do apply toner beforehand to make sure my skin is adequately hydrated. It works great as a primer and my powder foundation goes on beautifully on top of this facial lotion, leaving no cakeyness in sight.
The “daily” in the product name really is a key word in what this product is intended for. Lately the only time I spend in the sun is when getting out of the car, so I don’t need to get heavy handed with the greasy, water-proof SPFs. Since it leaves little to no whitecast, it’s non-greasy, and it applies thin, it’s perfect for your every day errands, work, school, etc.
If you’re concerned that SPF 18 doesn’t provide adequate protection, it actually blocks roughly ~93% of UVA and UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks just 4% more. Since this moisturizer is formulated so excellently, and I don’t spend a lot of time in the sun, I’m okay with taking the risk of being a little less protected.
Color me SUPER impressed with this facial SPF lotion. It ticks all the boxes in what I look for in an SPF, it’s cleanly formulated, and I really like the added age-fighting and moisturizing ingredients that allow it to act as skincare, since us oil users can’t often use our products with SPF. It’s unscented and gentle enough for the kiddos as well. If you struggle with facial SPF’s and you’re on the hunt for the perfect every day protector for that delicate face of yours, I highly recommend to check out Ursa Major’s new facial lotion!
Also, Ursa Major kindly included some other goodies along with the gifted sample, including their Essential Face Wipes (love these!), Face Wash, and Face Tonic. First impressions on the cleanser are super good and I will be writing on these very soon!
