About the Brand: Twelve Beauty is founded by scientist Pedro Catala. Pedro grew up in a village in the Alicante province of Spain where botanical remedies abounded and he later used this childhood curiosity to further feed his love for plants by studying pharmacy and received his Master’s in Botany, and eventually a PhD in Natural Formulation and Technologies. Twelve Beauty’s products are a marriage of plant-based technologies and science-backed ingredients in a lab setting. Their skincare is high-performance, designed to soothe and repair all skin types, especially those that are sensitive and problematic.
What is Boxwalla all about? To put it simply, they like to fill boxes with things that MUST be experienced. Boxwalla is a bi-monthly subscription box service that showcases artists and artisans from around the world giving the subscriber a choice of three different interests to choose from: The Beauty Box, The Film Box, and The Book Box. Each box is curated with context in mind and with a story to be told, each one delivering a beautiful sensory experience. Green beauty lovers will appreciate that they have high standards when it comes to ingredients and that they actually use, love, and enjoy the products they feature. Boxwalla typically features between 1-4 products including both full and generous deluxe travel-sizes. Their beauty box rings in at just $49.95 every other month, with each box valuing well over the price tag. If supply is available, they will offer one-time boxes after subscriptions close and they also offer non-renewing gift cycles.
TWELVE BEAUTY INTELLIGENT FRONTIER FACIAL OIL
» lightweight oil serum
» based in meadowfoam & sacha inchi oils
» barrier-supporting blend; reparative
» includes unsaponifiables; rich in vitamins & antioxidants
» other star ingredients include cupuacu butter, pollen, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, konjac root
» 30ml; retail value of $215
The star ingredients of Twelve Beauty’s Intelligent Frontier Facial Oil are unsaponifiables – fractions of plant oils (the ones that don’t turn to soap) said to be concentrated in vitamins and free radical-fighting antioxidants. The unsaponifiables in this blend are derived from a few different oils – olive oil, sunflower seed oil, non-GMO soybean oil, and wheat germ oil and these extracts are not as heavy as their whole-oil counterparts as triglycerides and oleic acid aren’t present here. Another benefit of unsaponifiables is that they can be great for barrier repair – unsaponifiables stimulate fliggarin production in the skin which is a protein that releases amino acids – a part of our skin’s natural moisturizing factor.
Unsaponifiables aren’t a new technology and while Pedro doesn’t entail the extraction process, he does say that it’s an expensive and complicated process as unsaponifiables are difficult to manipulate and easily become rancid and unstable, so they aren’t widely used in commercial skincare. Lucky for enthusiasts of Twelve Beauty, we get to experience the benefits of these interesting extracts thanks to Pedro’s knowledge and expertise in skincare formulation.
Bringing the topic back to seasonal skin transitions, I started using this Twelve Duo right in the thick of transitioning into warmer, humid weather and my skin was having a hard time adjusting – as if my skin itself was having a moment of confusion! Anyway, when I first started using Intelligent Frontier, I found it to be exceptionally heavy and it didn’t absorb well, seemingly sitting on top of my skin. I thought this was strange because it’s marketed to be lightweight and everyone who uses it describes it as such – why was it SO heavy on me? I experimented with applying different amounts, layering differently, and with layering different products, but all to no avail. I stopped using it and instead began using two other oils – one also from a Boxwalla limited edition offering and one from another new brand. My skin took a liking to these lightweight oils, bringing it back to balance after a difficult transition. Now that my skin is normalized, I recently re-introduced Twelve Beauty’s oil back into my routines and oddly enough, I’m no longer finding it heavy and am experiencing its lightweight feel as it was designed to be, and it now absorbs beautifully. I really have no explanation as to why it didn’t work for me at first but now does, other than thinking that my moisture levels/barrier needed work that only the other oils could provide.
Needless to say, I’m legitimately delighted that I get to take advantage of this beautifully neutral oil now and I’ve been liking it in the PM, combining one drop with their Nutritive Repair Emulsion for a lightweight moisture combo. This oil has Twelve Beauty’s classic scent that you’ll find among the rest of their products, which I like to describe as a sweet marshmallow-ey almond scent. It’s neutral, but pleasing.
TWELVE BEAUTY NUTRITIVE REPAIR EMULSION
» fluffy, marshmallow-ey cream format
» soothing lightweight formula
» restorative; formulated for barrier repair especially for skin that is stressed or sensitive
» ideal for PM, but can be used AM
» made with butters and spent grain wax
» 50ml; $72 retail value
If there ever was an ideal night time cream, Twelve Beauty’s Nutritive Repair Emulsion is it. This fluffy cream is soothing and it’s lightweight which makes it the perfect cream to combine with oils for a customizable moisture boost. As I’ve always said for my combination skin type, I prefer to layer lightweight products, rather than apply single heavy layers. After toning, I like to combine one drop of Intelligent Frontier and one pump of Nutritive Repair to create a moisturizing micro-emulsion, and I use this combo both AM and PM. One pump of Nutritive Repair doesn’t deposit a lot of product, but surprisingly one small pump is enough to cover the face and leave it feeling comfortable and happy.
Our skin’s barrier does its most repairing at night so it’s ideal to support this function with a good product like this one, but even though it’s marketed for PM use it can be used during the day too as there aren’t ingredients in this cream that are PM specific like acids.
Like Intelligent Frontier and the rest of Twelve Beauty’s line, Nutritive Repair has a subtle, neutrally pleasing sweet almond scent.
