Summer ’16 Essentials

We’ve just officially hit Summer and a change in season for me means breaking out certain products from my stash, or switching some out that are more appropriate for the season. You’ll notice that I won’t be mentioning any SPF products and this is because I rely on sun protection from my makeup. That’s generally not recommended because it’s believed to not be adequate in protection, but in the mean time I will be on the hunt for a natural SPF!

I have a tendency to neglect my bodily skin in Winter and the colder months of Spring, so at the start of Summer I have a lot of dead skin that needs to be removed. Enter body scrubs! I’m about one scoop away from finally finishing up my Zabana Essentials Coconut Sugar + Salt Body Scrub. This scrub contains coconut sugar, dead sea salt, baking soda, coconut shell powder and a handful of moisturizing oils and ingredients. I really enjoyed this scrub and will probably come back to it in the future. Next I’ll be working my way through the HEAVEN Salt of the Earth Body Scrub, an incredibly luxe and amazing scrub designed to ground and uplift. The entire Heaven range makes for the ultimate sensory experience (it’s really centered around essential oils) and this scrub is no exception! It smells of white fir and frankincense (there’s some spiciness and woodsiness to it as well) and has cracked black pepper and lavender buds for a beautiful texture. facial mist +

This one is self-explanatory but it’s always great to have a refreshing facial mist for the hot weather! I use my Amaki Skincare Rosewater as a hydrating toner before moisturizing (it’s important to not only add moisture through oils, but hydration through water as well) and I keep it cool in the fridge for face spritzing during the afternoon. Currently awaiting a new facial mist by Boyd’s Farm to arrive in the mail!

My lovely friend Taylor Foster, the creator of the previously mentioned HEAVEN skincare line, so generously gifted me with a bottle of her brand new LACE Body/Massage Oil and I am loving it so much for Summer! She describes it as sexy with an edge – it’s vanilla scented with hints of woodsy notes. I’m a big fan of her original Relax & Unwind Body Oil (which she also gifted me a full size of *heart eyes*) and her new Lace oil is the perfect and feminine sweeter scented companion to the original. I’m a bit seasonal with scents and prefer vanilla for the Spring and Summer. I find the vanilla to be a nice neutral because it’s not too sickeningly sweet, but it’s not too warm either. Her body oils are rich and silky and perfect for night time rejuvenation. I plan to write more on this body oil in the future!

Affordable and basic, yet high quality lip balms are essential for Summer when you find yourself constantly reapplying. The Herban Nectar Lip Balms (my favorite is in ‘mint’) are the perfect answer for that! Their balms are 100% organic with cold pressed almond oil, calendula flower, unrefined beeswax, and vitamin E oil. When it comes to lip balms I prefer more moisture than protection and I often find that stick lip balms with beeswax have a high ratio of beeswax to moisturizing ingredients, leaving it too waxy with little moisture. Herban Nectar’s balms are quite the opposite and leave my lips so moisturized, soft, and cushioned, yet still provide great protection for the lips. They have been a life saver for my lips when they get too chapped and peeling. Read my full review on Herban Nectar’s line of products here!

I’ve shared my love with this little lip conditioner many times on the blog and it’s pretty much going to be a year-round favorite of mine, but because of it’s spicy citrusness I adore the H is for Love Lip Conditioner for this warmer weather. In this organic lip conditioner you’ll find castor oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, macadamia nut oil, pomegranate seed oil, beeswax, and essential oils of palmarosa, bergamot FCF (non-photo sensitizing) and peppermint. I describe it as having that sharpness of citrus zest with the refreshing quality of peppermint. To boot it comes in a glass pot! I love this lip conditioner and highly recommend it. Read my full review on it here, where you’ll also find my experience sampling their Bara balm and Pollen toner.

A year-round favorite of mine, but one that most will especially appreciate for Summer, is the RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer, Described by RMS as “An ultra sheer, glowing, cream bronzer without the orange, without the pink and without the grey giving just the right amount of warm, sun kissed skin.” It’s totally true! On paler skin tones it gives the appearance of a true sun-kissed look because it has a sheer, slightly reddish undertone. In a way, it’s sun-kissed as in you gained a little tan with redness, rather than a fake orange glow, but it truly looks natural and so pretty on every skin tone I have seen wear it.

With this newfound heat and humidity it’s often necessary to set aside our moisturizing facial oils for the day time and opt for water-based moisturizers that will help to balance the skin. Earlier this month I picked up the Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Day Cream and it’s been great for day-time wear, especially under makeup because of this crazy humidity. GA describes this as being designed for all skin types but I don’t think dry types will find this to provide adequate moisture, unless it is layered with a facial oil. I will post an in-depth review on this moisturizer in the future!

The Zabana Essentials Baking Soda-Free Deodorant is my favorite clean deodorant I’ve tried thus far. The warmer weather has definitely been putting it to the test (I initially tried it during late Winter I believe) and it’s holding up great on me in the odor-blocking department. I have the lemongrass nectar scent and it smells so good, like nectarine. It has a basic and minimal formula like most natural deo’s do, but they have really perfected the ratio of ingredients, giving it effectiveness and a great formula that makes the stick firm yet malleable because it does not have to warm up on the skin in my experience. It’s not too sticky, it’s not too soft or creamy, and it’s not grainy!  I also love that it’s light in color because dark colored deo’s have ruined my lighter colored tops in the pit areas.  If you are sensitive to baking soda and have had trouble finding a baking soda-free deodorant that works for you, I highly recommend to try Zabana Essentials! They make mini-versions of their deodorants, perfect for trialing and testing.
